Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome back to another exciting school year at THE Tooele Junior High School, home of the Road Runners! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer.

As we start on the 2026-27 (SIIIIIIX/SEEEEEVEN) School year, I want to take a moment to share my excitement for the upcoming year. This is going to be an incredible school year at Tooele Junior High. At TJHS, our goal is to help students prepare for High School and be able to adjust to the changing world around us. One of the ways we do this is by encouraging our students to be on the FAST TRACK!

Junior High is not easy! There are a lot of changes and challenges, but I am confident that you are more the able to meet challenges and overcome them! We have an excellent staff that is willing to help make your experience at THE TOOELE JUNIOR HIGH awesome!

A key component of our students’ success is consistent attendance. Regular attendance is crucial for academic achievement and helps students build strong, positive habits. Being present in class every day not only supports learning but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. We believe that everyday counts, and every student’s presence makes a difference. We encourage parents and guardians to support our attendance goals by ensuring that students arrive on time and attend school every day.

Our first day of school is Wednesday August 19, 2026 and our school day starts at 7:55 AM! If your child is ill or has an unavoidable absence, please inform the school as soon as possible. We are here to support you and work together to address any barriers to attendance.

Attendance Matters
Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up.

When a student misses 2 days of school per month

The student will miss 20 school days in one year.
The student will miss 30 hours of math over one school year.
The student will miss 60 hours of reading and writing over one school year.
By graduation, the student will miss over 1 full year of school.

When a student misses 4 days of school per month

The student will miss 40 school days in one year.
The student will miss 60 hours of math over one school year.
The student will miss 120 hours of reading and writing over one school year.
By graduation, the student will miss over 2 full years of school.

Excusing an Absence on Skyward

To excuse a student on the app:

When parents sign up for the Skyward app, they will select a four-digit code.
Put in your four-digit code and continue to the app
Select the “hamburger button” (the triple bar or trigram symbol) on the top right.
From here you have two options, the first option (the message tab), will show you through the notification when your student was marked absent and what you need to excuse. With the attendance tab you simply submit a request.

Either of these two options will open a pop-up.
Complete the following information:
Student
Date/Time
Reason
Comment (optional – but very helpful, especially if you want to “excuse 2^nd hour”)
If you have more than one student and want this attendance request submitted for another student (maybe your family will be attending a funeral and all students need to be excused) then you can “Copy” the request and select additional students.
Submit

To submit a request from the website:

Click on the Families tab across the top
Click on Skyward for Parents
Log in
On the top right click student (if you only have one student you will just see your student’s name)
In the drop-down menu select the student’s name you need to excuse
Select Attendance in the menu on the left hand side
Click on the hyperlink at the top of the page “Absence Request.”
An “Add Request” pop-up block will open
Complete the following blocks:
Date/Time
Reason
Comment (optional, but once again, very helpful)
Save
Once you have “Saved” you will receive an email notification that an absence request has been submitted.
After the request has been processed, parents will receive a notification in Skyward
“(Student’s name) Absence Request has been (approved or denied)
The Absence Request submitted for (student) on (date) has been (approved or denied).
If a request is denied, a reason must be provided. It will then say “Go to your Absence Requests for further information.”
